The Charles de Gaulle Historial is unlike the rest of the Musée de l'Armée. Instead of glass cases filled with old objects, it is a high-tech, audiovisual space designed to immerse you in the 20th century through the eyes of "The General."

Concept: The Man of the Image

De Gaulle understood the power of media—radio (the Appeal of June 18) and later television. This museum reflects that. It is largely image and sound-based.

The Ring of Images

The centerpiece is a multi-screen cinema ring where a 25-minute biographical film plays on loop. It covers:

  • The Soldier: His time in WWI and his theories on tank warfare.
  • The Rebel: Refusing the 1940 armistice and fleeing to London.
  • The Liberator: His triumphant return to Paris in 1944.
  • The Statesman: Founding the Fifth Republic and his presidency.

Interactive Archives

Surrounding the cinema are interactive stations. You can listen to hundreds of hours of speeches, radio broadcasts, and watch newsreels. It’s a goldmine for French speakers, but audio guides provide translations for international visitors.

Why Visit?

It provides crucial context. To understand modern France, you must understand De Gaulle. His influence is everywhere, from the constitution to the nuclear program. This Historial explains why he is such a towering figure.

Note: It is located underground, beneath the Valeur courtyard. Look for the modern glass entrance. The architecture of the underground space itself, modern and sleek, serves as a stark contrast to the classical building above.
